“Which way do we go? Follow all those green arrows?” Monkey asks Dog.
Rat’s folder is lying on the veranda table. Inside are pages of a project idea, looking rather nice. “The H₂ project idea shows us the way,” says Rat.
Monkey leafs through the pages and counts with her finger. “Ooh, lots of arrows. And no orientation.”
“No orientation?” asks Rat. “There’s an arrow on every page.”
“Arrows, yes,” says Dog. “They merely point in directions. But from where and to where? None of the arrows states the next destination. Who do the arrows belong to? Each one is a commitment. This partner delivers. That authority decides. An arrow without a destination and without an owner remains just an arrow.”
He places the folder on top of the H₂ terrain map. “I used to believe pages like this because they looked so good. We only found the critical points later. In addenda. And in holding patterns.”
“And now?” asks Rat thoughtfully.
“Now we’ll clarify our location and destination together,” says Dog. “Let’s write the relevant information on each arrow: Assumption. Open question. Person responsible. A clear presentation provides an overview. A project foundation requires more.”
Monkey sticks notes next to the green arrows. Each one reads: “What does this arrow mean?”
Dog slides the compass across the table to Rat.
Rat takes it and places it next to the folder.
Dog leans back. “Arrows point in directions. Information about them turns them into signposts. Then the compass comes in handy too.”
Twelve pages of green arrows look like a route – yet they’re merely a collection of directions. Without a destination and without an owner, every assumption comes back: as an addendum, as a holding pattern, as a postponed decision.
