Monkey brings Horse a bowl of oats marked FEED while Horse and Dog review technical drawings for a hydrogen project on the veranda.

Episode 29: FEED before FID

Episode 29 of the WHySE Creatures Stories

“Here’s your FEED, Horse.”

Monkey comes onto the veranda carrying a bowl of oats. Written on the bowl is:

FEED

Horse and Dog are poring over drawings and tables.

Horse smiles.

“Thanks. Though this FEED stands for Front-End Engineering Design.”

“We talked about FEED with Dragon before,” says Monkey. “When he was preparing to make his investment decision.”

Dog nods.

“Exactly. Dragon needed reliable answers for his FID, his final investment decision. Many of those answers emerge during FEED.”

In this third phase of front-end loading, the technical planning is developed in greater depth:

Is the technology suitable for the application?
Are the costs, risks and interfaces clearly defined?
Are approvals, financing and organisation in place?
And how can the project be implemented?

Horse points to the drawings.

“That’s why we speak to the companies that may later take responsibility for engineering, procurement and construction while FEED is still underway. Their experience helps prepare a project that can actually be delivered.”

Monkey looks at Dog’s map.

“So the path leads from FEED through FID to construction?”

“Yes,” says Dog. “Acceptance and operation follow.”

FEED → FID → Construction → Acceptance → Operation

This sequence creates clarity, supports sound decisions and provides a viable path towards implementation.

Impatience can arise at many stages – among investors, project developers, funding bodies or future partners. Skipping steps often jeopardises the very investment decision everyone is waiting for.

After all, in the H₂ terrain, hardly any milestone stands alone.
